When Mick and Amy visit their elderly mother, Judy, her unexpected announcement and imminent future plans threaten to change their family dynamic. Without warning, the underbelly of their unresolved issues and family dysfunction are brought to the forefront and require immediate attention. Motherload is a look inside what really happened to a family under the veneer of perfection, happiness, and suburban affluence.
Mick: Early 40's. Is the older brother of Amy and son of Judy. He is the Peacekeeper of the family and because of that, tends to be the favored adult child. He has a close relationship with his sister, Amy, and is determined to be a good husband and involved father. He has a tolerance for Judy that ebbs and flows, but he is keenly aware of who Judy is, which has been beneficial to him throughout his life.
When Kate is ready to make some life changes, she's met with the stumbling block of her weight. Whether it be her doctor or her friend, Monica, perceptions of health and how women should look remain prevalent, even in the age of body positivity. Skinny follows two young women in their late twenties, as they explore their relationship with body image and the active role it plays in their lives, especially as it pertains to each other.
There are five characters in the play: (open ethnicity for all characters)
Kate: Late 20’s/ early 30’s. Kate is married to Rodger and they live in Chicago. She has gained some weight and finds herself on the heavy side of average weight for a woman today. Kate is ready to start a family and finds her biological clock ticking. However, she’s informed by her doctor that her current weight may be an obstacle to achieving her most desired role in life, which is becoming a mother. Must be comfortable wearing workout gear that may be form-fitting.
Rodger: Early 30’s, Kate’s husband. Rodger is a young professional and is not as certain as Kate about starting a family now. He fears a baby could bring upheaval to their lives putting a damper on his fun. He adores Kate and is not rattled by her weight.
Dr. Greene: 40s-50’s. Chicago’s finest OBGYN and fertility specialist with a gigantic ego. He is hyper-focused on women’s weight and the perfect woman’s body. He rarely takes into consideration anything other than the standard BMI scale.
Monica: Late 20’s/ early 30’s. Kate’s former college roommate and college friend to both Rodger and Kate. Monica has an amazing body and loves to show off what she can. She has been hard wired to think of life in terms of beauty and body image before anything else. She lacks a filter and thoroughly enjoys the attention of men. Must be comfortable wearing form-fitting workout clothes (i.e. leggings and a sports bra, etc).
Sales Girl: Any age. She is often the voice of truth about “Skinny.” She meets Kate in the first scene and will meet her several times throughout the play on Kate’s Journey.
